My mother had given me the pin cushion, complete with baby and newspaper clipping, which she had found in a junk shop. At this period in my development, I was ready to take off into the unknown, replete with risks, hope and a new love for life. All I needed was the faith of a mustard seed, a nurturing mother's love, the strength of a Samurai warrior, the clarity and roll of a marble, the endurance of a camel and a biplane to take off to the heavens to soar with the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson as my compass: "To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
