Simply and powerfully, this Drew Strouble Trompe l'Oeil painting represents a double illusion: not only does the subject magically levitate but the knotty, dovetailed wood begs to be touched, to see If It's Real. The French clown is the artist's autobiographical symbol, used again in the later painting "The Proposal". The sea biscuit also pushes the boundaries of illusion in this highly textured and dramatically classical composition.

Exhibited by invitation at the New England Institute of Fine Arts and the Sarasota Arts Association.
